Every December, I get the same message. Usually from a husband, sometimes from a daughter, once from a very stressed grandfather: "I want to get her something real this year. I have no idea where to start."
I love this message. Fine jewelry is the gift that actually gets worn, every day, for years, and it carries the story of who gave it. But I also know why people freeze. Sizes. Engraving. Gold or white gold. Will it get here in time. What if she doesn't love it.
So this is the guide I wish I could send to every one of them. No guessing. Just the handful of things that make a jewelry gift land, from someone who's wrapped a lot of them.
Step One: Look at What She Already Wears
The best clue is on her right now. Spend one day paying attention and you'll know more than any quiz could tell you.
- Yellow gold or white? Whatever her everyday pieces are, stay in that lane. Mixing is lovely, but it's a choice she should make herself.
- Tiny or noticeable? If her earrings are the kind you have to lean in to see, go delicate. If she wears hoops you can see from across the room, she'll love something with presence.
- What's missing? Earrings every day but a bare neck? Start there. Stacked rings and an empty wrist? That's your answer.
If you're still unsure, the Best Sellers are the safest place to look. They're best sellers because women keep choosing them for themselves.
Step Two: The Sizing Cheat Sheet
This is where most gifts go sideways, and it's the easiest part to get right.
- Rings: Borrow a ring she wears on that finger (not her thumb, not her pinky) and bring it to any jeweler, or trace the inside on paper. Rings are made in her size, so this one's worth the detective work. Our Open Heart Ring and Twisted Rope Stacker Ring are forgiving, stackable, and easy to love.
- Bracelets: Most women wear a 6.5" or 7". If she's petite, go smaller. If you can't check, pick a piece with a little give, like the Mini Bezel-Set Round Birthstone Bracelet.
- Necklaces and earrings: No size needed. If you have zero information, this is your category, and it's why pieces like the Mini Initial Necklace and Bar Studs are the most-gifted things we make.
- The Taylor Wave Bangle: It comes in sizes too. Measure her wrist with a soft tape or a piece of string, and if you're between sizes, choose the larger one. The Taylor Wave Bangle is the one gift I know is going to get worn every single day.
Step Three: Engraving, Done Right
Personalization is what turns a nice gift into the one she tells people about. A few rules from someone who's seen every version:
- Initials, a date, a set of roman numerals, or a single word. Short reads beautifully.
- Read it out loud twice before you confirm. Then have someone else read it. Engraved and custom pieces are final sale, so this is the moment to be sure.
- The Engravable Horizontal Pendant Necklace is the one I'd choose for a date or names. For something simpler, the Mini Initial Necklace is her letter, her kids' letters, or the letter of someone she misses.
- Not sure about engraving? Choose a birthstone instead. The Heart Birthstone Bezel-Set Bracelet is personal without a single letter.
Step Four: The Dates That Matter
Everything is handmade in New York, which is wonderful for the piece and important for the calendar.
- Made-to-order pieces take about two to three weeks. For a gift under the tree, order by the first week of December and you're comfortable.
- Custom pieces take longer, four to six weeks. If you're dreaming of a custom design, now is the time to start the conversation, not the week before.
- Running late? The Ready to Ship collection is your best friend. These pieces are made and waiting.
- Someone has to sign for it. Fine jewelry ships signature required, so send it where a person will be home, and not to the house where she'll open the door and ruin the surprise.
And if you're planning to shop over Black Friday weekend, make sure you're on our email list. That's where you'll hear first.
Step Five: Gifts That Always Work, by Budget
If you want the shortlist, here's mine.
- Under $500: Mini Huggies, Puffy Heart Necklace, Mini Initial Necklace, Rain Drop Earrings. Real gold, worn constantly, and never the wrong answer.
- Under $1,000: Engravable Horizontal Pendant Necklace, Heart Birthstone Bezel-Set Bracelet, Polished Square Huggies. This is the "oh, you really meant it" range.
- The forever pieces: Classic Diamond Studs, Signature Classic Diamond Tennis Bracelet, Taylor Wave Bangle. The ones she'll wear for decades and hand down after that.
If You Miss, It's Okay
You won't, if you've read this far. But if the size is off or she'd have chosen the other stone, eligible pieces can be exchanged or returned for store credit within seven days of delivery. Engraved and custom pieces are final, which is one more reason to read that engraving out loud.
And if you're truly stuck, email us at info@witholiviagrace.com. Tell me about her. I'll point you to the right piece. I do this for people every December, and I love it.
Forward this to the person who's "figuring out what to get you." Or, if you're the one gifting, bookmark it and come back when you're ready. Either way, you've got this.
XO Olivia
